VAT questions answered
What is the current VAT rate in South Africa?
The current South African VAT rate is 15%, effective 1 April 2018. It was previously 14% from 1993 to 2018. Only one rate applies to most goods and services. Some items are zero-rated (basic foodstuffs, exported goods) or exempt (residential rentals, financial services). Always check SARS.gov.za for the latest zero-rated and exempt categories.
How do I add 15% VAT to a price in South Africa?
Multiply the excl. price by 1.15. Example: R1,000 × 1.15 = R1,150 incl. VAT. The VAT portion is R150. On the calculator above, enter R1,000 and select "Add 15% VAT".
How do I remove 15% VAT from a price?
Divide the incl. price by 1.15. Example: R1,150 ÷ 1.15 = R1,000 excl. VAT. The VAT portion was R150. On the calculator above, enter R1,150 and select "Remove 15% VAT". Do not make the common mistake of multiplying by 0.85 — that gives the wrong answer (R977.50 instead of R1,000).
When must I register for VAT in South Africa?
You must register for VAT with SARS once your taxable turnover exceeds or is likely to exceed R1 million in any 12-month period. Voluntary registration is allowed once turnover exceeds R50,000 per year. See our VAT Registration Guide for the full process.
What is the difference between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive pricing?
VAT-exclusive (also called "excl. VAT" or "net") is the price before VAT is added. This is what you earn as a business. VAT-inclusive (also called "incl. VAT" or "gross") is the price the customer pays. In South Africa, consumer-facing prices must by law be displayed inclusive of VAT. B2B invoices may show both.
